Talk Time With Tamara, Founder Of Sweaty Betty

Posted by Chloe Page 1

Mother, entrepreneur, dog-owner and founder of super-cool sports and lifestyle brand, Sweaty Betty. If anyone knows how to multitask, it’s Tamara Hill-Norton. We caught up with her between runs, yoga sessions and formulating the next fitness wear collections we’ll all want in our wardrobes this spring to talk wellbeing and workouts…

What was your inspiration when you launched Sweaty Betty? I’ve always had an active lifestyle. As a family we did lots of watersports and skiing, so it's in my blood. When I moved to London from university I wanted to continue the same sort of lifestyle but I realised there wasn’t much out there catering to women. It was a very bleak landscape for women's activewear (there was nothing on the high street, apart from a little patronising women's section at the back of men's sports shops). And there were hardly any independent fitness studios - just masculine gym chains full of men grunting over weights. I wanted to reach out to women who had an active lifestyle. Whether yoga, skiing, swimming or running, I wanted to provide products that could be part of every woman’s wardrobe.

There’s been a huge rise in wellbeing influencers and bloggers over the past 12-18 months, why do you think this is? I’m very pleased to see this rise in wellbeing and how young these influencers are; the sooner we convert women to an active lifestyle at an earlier stage of their lives the better. I love the fact that working out has now become trendy and more of a social experience. You often see girls trying out new classes in a cool new studio together and then go for a drink.

Wellbeing is such a big part of the Sweaty Betty brand, how do you stay zen with so much going on? Organisation is key! To make things easier I include exercise as part of my daily routine, I cycle to work every day and I always have my gym kit with me - that way it’s easier to find the time.

Is cycling your favourite way to exercise? I like going to heated yoga classes such as jivamukti or lumi yoga in the winter too - it's so relaxing to come out of the cold and into a warm room. And I enjoy Psycle (the indoor spin sessions) - they’re a great endorphin-booster and they feel like a party rather than a drudge!

Talking of boosters, our collaboration Scent to Power Your Personal Best Kit was created to help energise people when they work out, did it make a difference to your regime?

For sure! Scents are very important to enhance any workout, whether your goal is to help you cool down in a restorative way or energise your workout, the adequate scents combined together will make a huge difference. As well as invigorating fragrances, I absolutely love the relaxing Neom Real Luxury™ Reed Diffuser - we have it in our office’s studio during our yoga classes. It’s such a lovely add on to the class and to the meditation.

Do you have any Neom products on your wishlist right now? The candles! I buy them time after time – I love lighting them during my yoga practice at home.

Our lifestyle stress audit reported that 91% of working women say that they’re stressed, does this surprise you and how do you deal with stress? No it doesn’t surprise me, nowadays women have to juggle so many things between work and family life - plus we live a high speed and intense lifestyle. That’s why I absolutely have to take the time to exercise. Practising yoga also really helps me when it comes to dealing with stress and managing my workload.

How do you relax and switch off? I love having friends over for cocktails at the weekend; having a glass of wine and falling asleep in front of a film or reading a book in front of the fire.

Finally, what's your wellbeing mantra for 2016? Be positive - surround yourself with positive people and make the effort to find positivity even in challenging circumstances.
