The essential buzz on this month's emerging wellbeing topics and trends, hot from NEOM HQ

1. Say Kon’nichiwa to Japonisme

This year the new wellness winds are blowing in from Japan. We’ve embraced matcha lattes (well, sort of – they are just SO unsettlingly green), we’ve tried forest bathing (does falling asleep in the park count?), and love a spot of ikebana (flower arranging to you and me).

We’ve also sat around really deeply pondering our Ikigai (the Japanese word for our true purpose) after falling more than a bit in love with Erin Niimi Longhurst’s new book Japonisme. And, before you get stressed out at the mere thought of such delicacy and perfection, take comfort in Wabi Sabi – another big Japanese trend. Meaning the beauty of the imperfect, it’s a lovely way to focus on the charm of the incomplete, and the wonder of the transient (and Julie Pointer Adams’ beautiful book Wabi Sabi Welcome might just be the perfect gift for that tirelessly perfect friend. Hint hint).

2. Mum’s the Word

A new breed of pregnancy and motherhood books has hit the shelves – which empower women with the not-always-beautiful truth about birth, motherhood and the great parenting beyond. We love Anna Whitehouse’s (AKA MotherPukka’s) raw and funny ‘Parenting the Sh*t out of Life’ and midwife Clemmie Hooper’s (AKA Mother of Daughters) How to Grow a Baby and Push it Out, and are excited about two new books out later this year – Your Birth, Your Way by Fearne Cotton’s down-to-earth hypnobirthing teacher, Hollie de Cruz, and the No Guilt Pregnancy Plan, by Rebecca Schiller. Both take the BS out of the birthing suite, while also supporting women to put away the stories of other women, and just focus, solely, on their own body, birth & beyond – their way.

3. From Fortune Teller to Fortune 500

2018 may well go down as the year that crystals, tarot and oracle cards crossed over from the twilight zone, into the here and Now (the Now Age being what the cool kids are calling this new New Age, BTW).

Anyone got their hands on The Power of Crystal Healing by super-cool Emma Lucy Knowles yet? Dubbed the modern crystal bible and featuring in VOGUE where they say; “injecting a little bit of magic into the everyday can be just the tonic to soothe the soul.” We’d never have believed it, but oracle cards are now being touted as helpful decision-making tools, used by everyone from top CEOs to our favourite wonder women. Curious? We are too. The fact is, if you buy into our favourite genius’ Albert Einstein’s belief that ‘there is no such thing as coincidence’, you’ll believe that the card you draw from a deck will hold some significance.

While we’d never hand over any of our decisions to a pack of cards (should I collect my kids from school??), we love that every time you sit to pull a card, you’re inviting a bit more time and breathing space into your life. Sitting with the image and message on your chosen card can encourage some self-reflection, and that can help us feel into our decisions that bit more successfully too. All oracle decks are different (and they’re not the same as Tarot, which takes a bit more practice and is historically surrounded by a bit more mysticism). Oracle cards are designed to offer simple prompts – e.g. Breathe– that get you to listen in and act in your own best interests that bit more (before you get lost in yet another thing on your to-do list).

4. The Vurger Revolution

There are now estimated to be more than 3.5 million full-time vegans in the UK – and just one glance around your local supermarket confirms a bevy of plant-based brands popping up all over the place. But, up until recently, the failsafe falafel or mushroom burger (hold the cheese & mayo), was a vegan’s only eat-out option at even the hippest burger joint. No longer. We’ve seen the vegan burger scene boom – it kicked off with 2017’s genius Pure Filth pop-up (brainchild of Gizzi Erskine, for the Tate Modern restaurant – think plant-based ‘junk’ food, that was both gut- and purse-friendly), and segued into 2018 with hip NYC-joint By Chloe flipping up a storm in London, alongside Vurger Co, V Burger & Mooshie’s – all of which serve vegan-only burgers, with plant-based sides & shakes. In the names of research, we came, we saw, we devoured (and it was good!).
