Q: Do you need a super boost of natural magnesium?

You might have heard of the wonder mineral magnesium, but like most vitamins and minerals some of us won’t be getting enough of the mineral. It’s a super-important mineral that is vital for our health and wellbeing and our modern lives (and diet) can cause us to be deficient in this mineral.

But, why is magnesium SO important for our health and wellbeing?

“Magnesium plays a role in most of our bodily processes! Due to magnesium's vital intracellular work, it becomes a crucial mineral to our overall physical and emotional health and wellbeing. Actually, there's hardly an organ or system that does NOT rely on magnesium to function optimally.” Says Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Barb Woegerer. “It's responsible for over 700 enzymatic reactions which means that it controls a lot of things. Without this mineral our bodies cannot function properly. It's a simple mineral but comes with such powerful results!”

Magnesium really is a wonder mineral which is helping with things like reducing our stress response, helping our sleep and mood too. We saw that a 2012 study* concluded that magnesium positively helped those suffering with insomnia. “Magnesium plays a role in supporting deep, restorative sleep by maintaining healthy levels of GABA. GABA is a neurotransmitter and its job is to reduce the activity of neurons in the brain and central nervous system. This leads to increased relaxation, reduced stress, calm mood and improved sleep.” Says Dr Barb.

Laura Murphy BSc (Hons), MSc, Nutritionist at Nutri Advanced agrees, "magnesium has an important role to play in helping the body to cope with stress. It does this by helping to regulate the HPA (hypothalamic- pituitary- adrenocortical) axis, which in simple terms means that Magnesium helps to balance stress. When under stress, more Magnesium is used up, so if you're stressed, you need to up your take of Magnesium." Says Laura.

Why are we so deficient?

Amongst it being bi product of diet, soil being depleted of the mineral Dr Barb says there are a multitude of reasons which include poor diet, “processed foods don't contain much magnesium (For every molecule of SUGAR you consume, it takes 54 molecules of MAGNESIUM for your body to process it!)” she says. “Stress too. Excess sympathetic activity will reduce stomach acid and we end up with poor absorption”.

How can we all make sure we are getting some, every day?

According to Dr Barb we can get magnesium from our foods and through transdermal methods such as magnesium oil, sprays or salt baths, or we can get it from a supplement.

“I prescribe magnesium to most of my patients because it covers so many things. Most of my patients come in with anxiety, stress, digestion, hormone imbalances, inflammation and blood sugar dysregulation and magnesium plays an important role in all of these areas. Magnesium is required for many different reactions and deficiency causes many of these issues.” Says Dr Barb.
