Sleep: Is An App The Answer?
A whole flurry of sleep-analysing apps have made their way onto the tech scene lately, monitoring your sleeping habits via your phone in a bid to help boost those zzz’s. But are they worth the hype? We’ve put 3 of the best to the test and here’s what we thought...
IOS and Andriod
Reviewed By: Beckie
Sleepbot is a free mobile app that has a motion sensor, sound recorder and smart alarm. It tracks your movement and sounds to see how deeply you are sleeping which enables the smart alarm to wake you up in your lightest sleep cycle for a more natural awakening (within a window of 30 minutes!).
The sound recorder also detects loud noises like snoring and sleep talking - perfect if you often wake in the night without knowing why.
It’s really easy to use, just start the app and place the phone face down on your bed. It does hog the battery a little, so charge it while you sleep. I’m not sure if the app worked or if I slept better because I followed some of the sleep tips, but when I woke in the morning I definitely felt refreshed!

With Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson, a life coach and clinical hypnotherapist, has released several wellbeing apps so I was really interested to try the latest one, Deep Sleep. It’s perfect for those who have a habit of worrying when you go to bed as it’s really great for clearing your mind.
My first thoughts were that it was simple and unfussy with just 3 functions - play, pause and stop. Launch the app and a calming Scotsman begins taking you through some guided meditation including breathing techniques and tips to relax your whole body and clear your mind.
I fell asleep within about 5 minutes, so it definitely worked for me! I’m not sure how effective it will be after I’ve used it lots of times, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see...

Sleep As Android
Reviewed By: Faye Marusiak
Sleep as Android tracks your deep and light sleep cycles, snoring and other people’s noise too. It has alarms for power napping and even a reminder to tell you to get to bed!
It also gives great advice based on the data that it collects, such as how to maximise your deep sleep percentage to help improve the quality of your sleep. It advised me on my best ‘fall asleep time’ which has definitely helped so far!
The verdict? This app has tonnes of features which is great, but for a lot of them you need other gadgets to utilise them. It would have been amazing if I had all of these, but the bedtime reminder and tailored advice definitely helped me get a better night’s sleep.
