Discover how Tess Daly does Christmas
THERE’S NO WINDING DOWN FOR TESS DALY IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS! WITH THE FINALS OF STRICTLY FIRMLY IN THE DIARY, IT MEANS MORE TIME IN THE STUDIO, LESS TIME POUNDING THE STREETS FOR PRESENTS. LUCKILY HER LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION LIFESTYLE MEANS SHE’S USED TO WORKING UNDER PRESSURE SO SHE CAN STILL ENJOY THE FESTIVITIES WITHOUT FEELING FRAZZLED!
Nicki Wedgwood: With Strictly, family life and commuting back and forth to London for filming, how do you juggle that hectic pre-Christmas rush?
Tess Daly: Because the pre-Christmas period tends to be my busiest time work-wise, I try and get as organised as possible by starting my Christmas shopping early - this year it was in October! I hate pressure shopping and enjoy being inspired by a gift for a particular person. Top of my Christmas list is the Neom Sleep Gift box set - the Tranquillity fragrance is divine
NW: In our Neom Lifestyle Stress Audit we uncovered 96% of working mums are stressed, does that surprise you?
TD: Gosh, that's an outrageous percentage of stressed out mothers! I think all working mums, including myself are constantly trying to achieve the right work/life balance. I'm fortunate in that I have a very supportive husband who is brilliant at helping out with the kids - we tend to match our schedules so that at least one of us can be around for them at all times. When it comes to those special school occasions such as school nativities and carol concerts I always try and clear our diaries where possible to accommodate them as these are the times we don't want to miss out on.
NW: Do you and your family have any Christmas traditions?
TD: Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I love sticking to the family traditions that I grew up loving so much. We'll have pillowcases with presents in for the girls and a huge roast turkey dinner with all the family followed by lots of party games in the afternoon. The magic of Christmas is hard to beat and it's extra special when you have young children.
NW: Who’s up first on Christmas morning?
TD: My daughters are always up at the crack of dawn knocking on our bedroom door to wake us up and wanting to know if Santa Claus has been to visit!
NW: What’s the best thing Santa has ever left you under the tree?
TD: I think the best Christmas present I ever received was an engagement ring! Vernon surprised me by hiding the ring at the bottom of my pile of presents and going down on one knee to propose when I opened it! Very romantic indeed.
NW: Do you have any failsafe fallbacks when you’re buying for others?
TD: My idea of shopping heaven is a couple of hours in the Selfridges’ make-up and beauty department - I love buying beautiful make-up products. Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonder Glow is the perfect stocking filler for girlfriends, plus I love to buy luxurious candles for friends as gifts; even the boys like them! Fortnum’s hampers are a must too. I also tend to do a lot online shopping, particularly for family who live overseas.
NW: What have you got on your wishlist this year?
TD: Top of my Christmas list is the Neom Sleep Gift box, the Tranquillity fragrance is divine and you also receive an online sleep consultation with the Neom sleep expert, Anandi which is genius! I’m also planning on filling the house with the Christmas Wish Candles, they're lovely and festive and perfect for relaxing over the holidays!
NW: Can you reveal any other feel good, de-stressing tips and tricks you stick to over the festive season?
TD: I'm a huge advocate of doing things that make you feel good - as women we tend to lead very busy lives, what with working and caring for those we love, so all too often we’re the last ones we think about! Things that make my day might include taking time out for a yoga class, having a morning coffee with a friend after the school run, brainstorming new ideas for my make-up range, going for a family walk in the park with the dogs, sitting down to a home cooked Sunday roast, Googling property on the French Riviera or spending a few minutes catching up on a great book. When the children are in bed I love to unwind in a hot bath with plenty of beautiful scented candles - it feels like a real indulgence and leads to a great night sleep too!
NW: Finally, will you be making any New Year’s Resolutions?
TD: My New Year’s resolution always tends to be the same - get a personal trainer, get fit and eat clean after the decadence of the holiday period!
